Early on in my travels across Europe I made an impromptu decision to hike the West Highland Way in Scotland. That was all it took to get me hooked on trekking, which quickly became a major part of my travel itinerary. I preferred to hike without a guide. Besides being less costly, hiking without a guide forced me to be completely engaged with my environment (and consequently I learned a lot) and it gave me a lot more flexibility in where I went and who I hiked with (I did many of these treks solo).
I put this page together to share the adventures that have inspired me along with some basic resources and information to make the planning process easier for others who want to explore these wonderful places. My information is likely to be incomplete and should not substitute for your own planning.
